Sept 6th meeting, demo and ONS at American House Cederlake - AHC Demo: "Encaustic (wax) Painting" by Donna Sands This is a free meeting and open to the public, so all you friends of PAL, come and see how we're doing. Light refreshments will be served. This and all demos are free and open to the public The One Night Show (ONS) is now open to the public. Bring in one piece of artwork to display publicly at the meeting. See below. Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface-usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. Donna will talk about and show the 2 techniques she does, one is a slick surface when finished, and the other is more textured. She will have samples of both. Artists create, and part of the creating process is to challenge oneself. I have been working in oils since graduating from college; the landscape being my primary subject. Twenty years ago I was introduced to the encaustic process, and have finally allowed myself the time to explore the medium in depth. Being a landscape painter, my first pieces explored nature in wax. As I progressed, I found I was not working with the medium, but trying to control it. By allowing myself to evolve, my pieces have become more abstract. I build up layers on my surfaces and create depth by fusing each layer individually As the surface heats up the medium becomes liquid and if I desire, I can manipulate it to creating different effects. As I advance in years, my collective memory has become a strong influence on what I create. I have many stories to tell , my technique and subject change as I translate a time and place onto the surfaces. Some of my images require an impasto effect, but at the moment I am enjoying the translucency I can get by using less pigment, complicating the colors, and allowing it to all flow together.. Sept 7th at 10:30am, Dropoff/Changeout of exhibit at Plainfield Community Center-PCC Members, please pickup your hanging artwork and dropoff 1-2 new pieces to hang at the Plainfield Community Center. If you haven't displayed here yet, please participate in this opportunity. If you can't make the pickup, please make arrangements as all artwork is changing. Each person attending should bring in one artwork to display to everyone at the meeting. The best judged artwork will receive a ribbon.
