Gary Schirmer- Art Demonstration and History

Gary Schirmer, NIU / BA Studio Art 1979 SIUC / MFA  1991, has been a working artist for forty years, and a studio-art educator at the college level for 25 years in the subjects of painting, drawing, life drawing photography and printmaking, as well as a lecturer in Art Appreciation, at the College of Dupage and Joliet Junior College.  He also works as a commercial artist and illustrator, portrait artist, photo-documentarian, and scenic painter and prop designer/fabricator for the film and television production industries and for live theater production. He has worked as a freelance scenic artist and set fabricator for twenty years with WTTW, Channel 11 Chicago. He has also worked as a freelance curator and judge in fine art venues for 25 years, including managing public spaces for art exhibitions. He has had an ongoing commission with the Wisconsin Humane Society, painting animal portraiture for exterior display on two facilities in the Milwaukee area.

In my production as a fine artist, including painting, drawing and printmaking, I work primarily in a representational / narrative style, often commenting on social and psychological perspectives relative to human relations and the post-modern condition. I began painting from scenes in the 1980's that I experienced directly while living in the city of Chicago for about 15 years, and began printmaking with related urban imagery beginning in the 1990's. I've worked from the human figure since undergraduate study at Northern Illinois University, and find it still an inexhaustible vehicle for artistic expression and experimentation with various mediums and application techniques. I've been a monitor for an open life drawing session for two years with the Oak Park Art League, and enjoy exchanging dialog on the subject with like-minded individuals. Most recently my work has taken an overt political turn, incorporating multiple-image works configured in non-rectangular formats.

And Don't forget to browse the artwork in The One Night Members Art Show!
